After several train transfers from Kyoto, including one only 10 minutes, because of the kindness of strangers arrived at Uno then ferried to the island. Thanks to the vision of one very wealthy man, this island and now other nearby places feature site specific art and amazing architecture, much by self-taught Tadeo Ando.
The above is a woman’s car. Below artist-embellished Uno train station.
This community center was designed by Hiroshi Sambuichi.
Above an artist’s temple. Below a peak at a private architect-designed house.
Above Hotel Benesse and below an artist house.
Above and below is an homage to Monet’s garden. The museum billionaire, from the family that owned Berlitz, albeit started in RI, USA, and other holdings; owned a bunch of Monet water lilies and devotes a large naturally lit room to them.

Oh how COOL. The island, I mean. Although boy would I have loved a Woman’s Car on the 1 train in the 1970s.
